HP EliteBook 840 G1-G2 Keyboard, Backlit (P/N 736654-001)

HP EliteBook 840 G1-G2 Replacement Keyboard, Backlit

Fix a broken or unresponsive keyboard on your HP EliteBook 840 G1 or 840 G2 with this genuine-fit backlit replacement (P/N 736654-001). A direct drop-in fit built to the original specification.

Cracked keycaps, dead key rows, spill damage, or a backlight that has stopped working are the most common reasons this keyboard needs replacing. Rather than settling for a loose, ill-fitting generic part, this unit is manufactured to the exact key spacing, screw points, and clip layout of the factory 840 G1/G2 keyboard, so it seats and locks in exactly where the original one did. Buyers also frequently replace this part after years of heavy use have simply worn the key switches down to the point where certain letters no longer register reliably.

Key Features

• Backlit Keys – even illumination across the full key deck for low-light typing
• Direct Fit – matches the original 840 G1/G2 layout, including the trackpoint nub and mouse buttons
• Brand New – not refurbished, not salvaged from a donor unit
• Includes Backlight Cable – ready to install without sourcing extra parts
• US Layout – standard QWERTY English keyboard with correct function-key labelling
• Solid Frame – reinforced backing plate keeps typing firm with minimal flex
• Full-Travel Keys – factory-matched key feel rather than a shallow, mushy substitute
• Matte Keycap Finish – resists fingerprint shine and stays legible over years of use

Compatibility & Installation

Built specifically for the HP EliteBook 840 G1 and 840 G2 chassis, this keyboard uses the same connector and pinout as the original, so it plugs directly into the existing motherboard header without adapters. Installation is a straightforward top-down swap that most technicians finish in 15 to 20 minutes with a small Phillips screwdriver, and the palm rest and display hinge do not need to be disturbed. Because the mounting tabs align exactly with the factory chassis, there is no need to trim, bend, or force the new keyboard into place.

Performance & Reliability

Every unit is bench-tested for key response and backlight uniformity before dispatch, so there are no dead zones or flickering LEDs out of the box. The key switches are rated for sustained daily use, giving the same long-term reliability expected from an original HP part rather than a short-lived aftermarket copy.

Because it carries the correct 736654-001 specification, fitment issues such as loose keycaps, uneven backlighting, or a keyboard that sits proud of the deck are avoided entirely. Customers replacing a worn or spill-damaged unit typically report the new keyboard feels identical to how the laptop typed when it was new.

Ideal Users & Use Cases

This keyboard is a good fit for repair technicians servicing EliteBook 840 fleets, students and professionals whose daily-use laptop has a failed key row, and IT departments keeping spares on hand for corporate 840 G1/G2 deployments still in service. It also suits resellers refurbishing used 840 units for resale, where a fresh, undamaged keyboard makes a noticeable difference to buyer confidence.
